CREEES and the UT Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies are proud to announce that we have been awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Fulbright–Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Program grant to fund a new summer 2018 program, “Siberia by Southwest: An Intensive, Project-Based Russian Immersion.”
The program will provide 20 K-16 educators, undergraduate and graduate students from across the American Southwest with 10 weeks of study at Irkutsk State University in South Central Siberia next summer.
“Siberia by Southwest” aims to attract participants who are pursuing careers in education and in fields critical to US national security. The program will respond to vital regional interests through an emphasis on geography, energy, and the environment that corresponds to concerns shared by Texas, the Southwest and Siberia alike. By equipping participants linguistically and professionally for careers in these fields, this program will help train the next generation of experts capable of communicating at a highly specialized level in a language critical to US national interests.
In addition to intensive language training, participants will explore Irkutsk and the surrounding region, as well as Moscow and St. Petersburg, in excursions that will provide them with a broader picture of Russian history, culture, and contemporary issues. They will undertake hands-on research projects related to their own academic and professional interests and create open-source digital resources for future classroom and research use.
